Just like many of you, City Fitness has goals for the New Year. To expand on our 2014 renovations, the next round of the Great Streets Grant will help us with some further modernization and equipment upgrades. But we want to do more…a lot more. 

City Fitness is a small business founded in 1983 with the simple beginning of providing on-site fitness instructors to places of business. Considered cutting edge at the time, work site fitness is now considered a mainstay and we have persevered. We provide fitness classes to the US Supreme Court, National Gallery of Art, World Bank, the Holocaust Museum, and the National Zoo to this day.

Our gym has been serving the fitness needs of the Cleveland Park community in Washington, DC for over 21 years. We have awesome long-term members, some of who have been with us since we opened, and this stability and co-support has created a thriving community where we serve people of all ages and abilities. We are a home-away-from-home where members feel safe, connected and welcome.  We maintain a quality member service mindset in an era where customer service has diminished, priding ourselves on providing personal attention.  City Fitness is the "Cheers" of Fitness because, unlike other gyms, we actually “know your name.”


Being small in a world of big box facilities, a woman-owned gym in a male-dominated field, and a friendly, neighborhood business in an ever- growing isolated world, we face the challenge of staying competitive. We have invested in our physical space constantly through the years with new equipment, new floors, painting, updating our accessories, and improving our customer service and staff education. In 2014, we began a major capital improvement campaign: with assistance from the Great Streets Grant we partially refurbished our locker rooms and replaced our aged fitness floor A/V equipment. In 2015, we are poised to finish the locker room upgrades, replace our HVAC system, upgrade our cardiovascular machines and more. The Great Streets Grant will help us with some of this, but we want to do so much more.


Our budget does not allow for the upgrades to our weight room equipment and other parts of our A/V systems. There are 4 weight room pieces that could be more user-friendly - especially for our more mature members while, at the same time, still serving our elite athletes.  Our televisions are very old and are difficult to see on some cardio machines. Our campaign to raise $10,000.00 will allow us to begin the effort of replacing these items. Help us achieve this goal while still allowing us to optimally service the diverse demographics that our gym proudly attracts. If we don't reach our goal, we will purchase as many pieces of equipment as we can with the money we raise. So, no amount is too small to help and every bit of it will help with working capital toward our upgrades.

Give a Gift & Get a Lift at City Fitness - December 19!

City Fitness Gym is collecting Toys for Tots now through December 19. Bring a new, unwrapped toy suitable for a child or teen and local Marines will pick up the donations and distribute the toys to those in need. Not a member and interested in the gym? Drop off your toy on December 19 between 8am-7pm and get a free week pass to try us out.

Due to impending inclement weather, our outdoor classes originally scheduled for October 24 are going to be rescheduled to October 31. All regularly scheduled fitness classes (indoors) are open to the public BOTH weekends...come try a class one weekend or both!

City Fitness Gym invites you to our Open House weekend next weekend, October 23-25. All fitness classes FREE all weekend; other events are as follows: Friday, October 23
  • 7:30-9:00 p.m. CityScapes Photo Exhibit Opening: Beverly Jackson has hung a great local photograph exhibit at the gym and is selling her photos to raise money for Street Soccer, USA. No purchase necessary - just come by to view the art and enjoy the line-dancing lessons and more!
Saturday, October 24
  • All fitness classes FREE to the public - both outdoor and regular indoor.
  • 10:00-11:00 a.m. Fall Fitness Relay - a fun outdoor workout suitable for all fitness levels. (Weather permitting.)
  • 11:00-11:30 a.m. Cardio Dance - An outdoor dance aerobics class; get your groove on. (Weather permitting)
  • 11:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Yogatalaugh - 30 minutes of silliness that will help reduce stress, work your abs, and lighten your day. (Weather permitting)

City Fitness Gym Prom Dress Drive Extended through 3/22!

The good news is we have received a lot of dresses, shoes and accessories that will help to outfit teens going to prom in the Cheyenne River reservations. There is more good news! We are extending our deadline through Sunday, March 22...so search through those closets and bring in your special occasion wear over to the gym! If you are not a gym member we'll give you a free week of membership in trade for your donation.

Resolution Step #20 - Motivation Waning? Hire a City Fitness Personal Trainer

OK, you're approaching the last week of January. Is your motivation to stay with your routine starting to drop? Think about hiring a personal trainer. City Fitness makes it easy (and in the scheme things much less painless than some facilities). We offer a 3-session package of one-hour training sessions for $150.00. You can even break that up into six 30-minute sessions instead. Do that 30-minutes each week for six weeks to maintain your direction and to step up the workout more!

May is Fitness Fiesta Month

Our Annual Fitness Fiesta party was held May 3 and was a success! We raised over $2800 for H.O.M.E. (www.iwannagohome.org) through raffle ticket sales and donations. Those who entered the Cook-Off contest made some GREAT food and a good time was had by all. We continue the spirit of celebration by focusing on our array of Fitness Classes throughout the month. Watch the bulletin boards for special class announcements and for some "intro" level classes for those of you who are new to the class formats. We are also offering a May City Fitness Gym membership special - to celebrate our Fiesta, there is no initiation fee for new Fitness Class only members.

Couples Work It Out Special!
